Safely reopening Marin County from COVID-19

Restaurants, Wineries, & Bars

Current Status

Restaurants and related businesses may operate in strict compliance with the state’s guidance for the purple tier with the following modifications:

  • Restaurants: Outdoor only with modifications
  • Wineries and tasting rooms: Outdoor only with modifications
  • Bars, breweries, and distilleries: Close

These businesses are subject to the stated limitations and must be in strict compliance with the Health Officer of the County of Marin Public Health Order, and all applicable State guidance for outdoor dining, takeout, and delivery.  You can track the status of future business reopenings on the reopening status webpage.

Reopening Guidelines

Each business must create, adopt and implement a Site Specific Protection Plan (SPP) prior to reopening. The SPP template combines state-level guidance published in the California State Resilience Roadmap and local Marin County public health policies.

NOTE: The following guidance was updated by the State on December 1st and includes changes around:

  1. Added language around Blueprint Tiers
    • Includes language about performances/performers in these settings
    • References forthcoming guidance for live performances
  2. Added language around ventilation
  3. Revised Face Coverings section to reference CDPH guidance
  4. Includes consideration for employers to provide a second barrier (e.g. face shield or safety goggles) to workers who consistently come within  6 feet of customers and/or co-workers
  5. Includes physical distancing between tables measuring from the backs of chairs

Please follow the state guidance provided below as it applies to your establishment:

Temporary Structures for Outdoor Business Operations must be in compliance with all applicable State and County guidelines.

Incorporate the appropriate industry specific guidelines from the state guidance linked above into the “Business Specific Best Practices” section of your SPP.

Add your restaurant status to the Open Restaurant Map!

To make it easier for people to find what restaurants are open (inspired by a similar effort in the Puget Sound area), the City of San Rafael created a map where Marin County restaurants can add their location, website, open hours, and whether they are open for pickup / delivery / outdoor / indoor dining. Restaurants have full control to edit their listings themselves on the map so they can update any incorrect or outdated info.
